Holiday Gift Guide: Support Small!

Here at Picnic Party, we’re in full-fledged holiday mode! Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or something else, winter is the season of giving. To keep in spirit, we love to support our communities by shopping for gifts through small businesses like our own! Here’s our list of favorites that offer unique and handmade products for every person in your life!

Labour of Love

This is the perfect shop for the fashion-forward person in your life! With nods to LA streetwear, Labour of Love features ethically made unisex garmets with messages geared towards leading life with love.

Native to West Seattle, And Arlen is a LQTBQ+ owned business that offers handmade, minimalist jewelry. With a wide array of pieces in different styles and colors, you’re sure to find a unique piece to give someone special in your life!

One of the best things about the holidays are those familiar, cozy scents of the season! Fingerprint & Co. has you covered, with holiday gift sets and year-round scents depending on preference. This Seattle-based company is also LGBTQ+ owned, and takes care in making soy wax candles, available in stunning handmade cement containers. We love these for our own spaces, corporate gifts, or sending love from afar.

This Asian woman owned small business is our pick for the perfect stocking stuffers for the plant enthusiast you love! The on-trend keychains, pins, stickers, and stationary is made with care in Seattle. If you want to go the extra mile, there are also small air plants and handmade plant holders available for sale.

Another Asian woman owned business we love in Seattle is Sskein! Their alpaca wool clothing and accessories are all ethically created which means sustainably sourced materials, carbon neutral shipping, and recyclable packaging. Give the gift of luxury clothing this season, and help your loved ones stay warm during cold winter nights!

Have a foodie in your life who loves to cook? Check out Book Larder! Based in Seattle, this community cookbook store houses recipes from around the world, and even holds a variety of related events, like the “Wine and Food Pairing 101” class. If you’re not from the area, Book Larder can ship to your location and offer virtual events on their website.

Our final recommendation is a Snoqualmie Tribe owned business that partners with Native artists around the country to design and sell products! 8th Generation offers wool blankets, ceramic mugs, jewelry, and more to keep you covered for any of your gift needs. Visit their shop in Pike Place Market or shop online!

Shopping small is so important for the local economy.

No affiliate codes, no huge marketing budgets -- maybe not even free two day delivery *gasp!* But shopping small and local is one of the best things you can do for your community:

  1. Supports the local community, the dreams of a diverse population of entrepreneurs.

  2. Small businesses pay higher tax rates than big businesses -- so by spending with small businesses, you’re also letting tax dollars trickle down to infrastructure, education, and more.

  3. Investing in your community as often time, small business owners are the ones looking out for the community in various ways.
